Abstract
Problems associated with the transition from schooling to higher education are assuming increasing significance as demand for places slackens. Student entry characteristics and adjustment difficulties are discussed in relation to choice of course and institution. It is argued that urgent action is needed to deal with transition problems and a number of possible solutions are suggested. Keywords
