Comparison of Orchard and Glasshouse Tests in Screening of Apple Breeding Progeny for Resistance to Venturia Inaequalis in Queensland From 1985 to 1994

Abstract
The national apple breeding program for resistance to black spot caused by the fungus Venturia inaequalis conducted by the Department of Primary Industries, Queensland at Stanthorpe relies on a combination of glasshouse and orchard testing. Comparisons of glasshouse ratings of seedlings in 1986, with orchard observations of trees from 1990 to 1994, and glasshouse inoculations of grafted scions in 1993 show that a mean 86% (78 to 87%) of seedlings maintain their glasshouse ratings of resistance to V. inaequalis in the orchard. These results show that the combination of glasshouse and orchard methods used at the Granite Belt Horticultural Research Station offers a reliable method for selecting apple progeny resistant to V. inaequalis.Keywords
