Abstract
Fear and doubt, universal companions of injury, become abnormal reactions only when they continue after the real threat is over or when they interfere with recovery. Thus, early recognition and management of these reactions are vital. The physician should avoid making comments that may stimulate fantasies in the susceptible patient. Especially prone to abnormal psychologic reactions are persons who have learned to enjoy playing the patient's role.
