Photochemistry of methyl(hydrido)diplatinum(II) complexes, including examples of C—H and C—C bond formation by intramolecular reductive elimination

Abstract
Photolyses of the complex cations [Pt2H(μ-H)Me(μ-dppm)2]+, [Pt2(μ-H)Me2(μ-dppm)2]+, and [Pt2Me3(μ-dppm)2]+ lead to reductive elimination of H2, CH4, and C2H6, respectively. However, photolysis of [Pt2Me2(μ-dppm)2]+ in pyridine gives [PtMe2(dppm)] and [PtMe(C5H5N)(dppm)]+. The reductive eliminations of CH4 and C2H6 are shown to be primarily intramolecular reactions by isotopic labelling. Quantum yields are reported and the mechanisms of reaction discussed.
