Abstract
The development of new carious lesions during orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances was studied in patients with high levels of caries inducing oral microflora (S. mutans) in saliva prior to treatment. All patients were given an oral hygiene education and fluoride applications prior to the active orthodontic treatment period, and were divided into one test and one control group. In the test group, chlorhexidine treatments were performed throughout the active orthodontic treatment period whenever the amount of S. mutans in saliva exceeded the level of selection. A difference in caries incidence was recorded between the groups primarily on buccal surfaces of bonded teeth; but this was not found to be statistically significant. Keywords
