Abstract
Atypical acid-fast bacilli were separated from Mycobacterium tuberculosis var. hominis by their ability to grow in dehydrated beef and yeast extract broth at 37 C and subsequently on glycerol agar in less than 10 days. Nocardia was identified by its failure to grow on Littman''s agar and by its colony characteristics on other media. M. fortuitum was identified by its distinctive moist and rapid growth on all media.
