Abstract
The adult respiratory distress syndrome appears to represent a confluence of varied, often unrelated pulmonary insults. Treatment is generally symptomatic almost regardless of etiology. However, recognition of the central role played by neutrophils and their activation products has led to a number of more specific therapeutic approaches for this relentless and highly lethal disease. Keywords
