Occupational Health Experience in the Construction of Phase I of the Mass Rapid Transit System in Singapore

Abstract
The construction of the Mass Rapid Transit System in Singapore is progressing well. All the tunnelling work under Phase I of the project has been completed. Cases of occupational disease arising from the project were notified to the Department of Industrial Health, Ministry of Labour. While there were a few cases of barotrauma and industrial dermatitis, the most common occupational disease was decompression sickness. The overall decompression sickness rate was low, mainly because of the relatively lower pressures used and the use of the Blackpool Decompression Tables. The proportion of supervisory staff among those who had repeat episodes of decompression sickness was significantly higher than that of other workers. The possible reasons for this are discussed.
