Abstract
A study of the chemical composition of secondary amyloid occurring in human and horse livers revealed that amyloid is predominantly a hydrophilic protein. Also a small amount of carbohydrate was detected. There appears to be a direct relationship between the amount of amyloid and the hexosamine content of this material. The carbohydrates were identified by paper chromatographic procedures and found to be predominantly glucosamine, glucose, galactose, and a uronic acid. The virtual absence of P in this material indicates that it is not merely altered protoplasm. Keywords
