Abstract
We apply the standard finite-element method to band-structure problems. In particular, we consider the relative advantage of employing higher-order elements and nodeless variables in such a context. Unfortunately, however, such procedures do not appear to be competitive with plane-wave expansion techniques, at least for the simple example considered here. Keywords
