Abstract
The title of this paper is somewhat ambiguous in that the eyelids are actually an integral part of the lacrimal system. A better definition might be that the lacrimal apparatus is made up of 3 parts: (1) the secretory system, consisting of the various glands; (2) the distributional system, consisting of the lids which not only carry the fluid to all parts of the conjunctival sac, but also furnish the motor power for the lacrimal pump; and (3) the excretory system. This paper is presented with the hope that a detailed anatomical description of certain parts of the lacrimal apparatus will enable us to select more successful methods of treating its disorders. Anatomy A. The Eyelids. —1. Skin and Subcutaneous Fascia: Although these are 2 distinct entities, they may be treated grossly as one layer which is very thin and somewhat elastic.
