Abstract
Using continuous infusion of I4C-labelled glucose, plasma glucose and muscular glycogen were studied in shivering dogs exposed to cold ambient temperatures. Comparisons were made, using the data obtained with the same procedure in running and in resting dogs. Oxygen consumption was nearly the same in shivering and in running dogs and was about 4 times higher than under resting conditions. Compared to running, reduction in plasma glucose oxidation was observed in shivering dogs, along with an increased muscular glycogenolysis - both resulting in a grossly similar use of carbohydrates (glucose + muscular glycogen). Keywords
