Abstract
The lattice dynamics of the Heusler ordered alloy Au23Cu30Zn47 have been studied as a function of temperature above its transformation to martensite. In response to the suggestion of Kelly and Stobbs that a charge-density-wave mechanism, driving an omega-type instability, is responsible for the martensitic transformation, the (111) modes were studied in detail. No mode softening was detected in either longitudinal or transverse modes, but some softening of the (001) transverse acoustic mode was observed. The convergence of two (111) longitudinal zone-boundary modes is discussed in terms of the L21 to B2 order-disorder transformation. In addition, some new elastic peaks are reported. Keywords
