Filariasis With Recurrent Hematuria

Abstract
To the Editor.—Chyluria is a known complication of filariasis, and achylous hematuria has occasionally been reported. This communication records a case of filarial hematuria, initially confused with acute glomerulonephritis. A renal biopsy specimen curiously showed microfilaria in a renal tubule.Report of a Case.—An 18-year-old man had painless frank hematuria for six days, and bilateral loin pain, puffiness of face, and pedal swelling for two days, and a slight fever. Hemoglobin level was 8.0 gm/100 ml; leukocyte count, 20,000/cu mm. A slight albumuria was accompanied by a slight hematuria, with both granular and red blood cell casts. A urine culture yielded no growth. The blood urea level was 24.8 mg/100 ml. Forty-four percent of the leukocytes were eosinophils.Percutaneous biopsy of the left kidney, one week after complete cessation of hematuria, showed microfilaria in one renal tubule, with no other abnormality (Figure).The patient was discharged on his
