Abstract
The relaxation time between the hyperfine levels of iodine atoms in the upper state of the iodine laser transition was measured. For conditions typical of an iodine laser amplifier a time constant of 30 ns is obtained. The time constant does not depend on the argon buffer gas pressure. Keywords
