Abstract
Detailed measurements on the optical absorption of the F center in rubidium chloride are reported. The F centers were produced by additive coloration and ionizing radiation. The photon energies for the point of maximum and points of half‐maximum absorption are determined for temperatures between 4° and 373°K. A single effective phonon frequency of ω = (2π)×2.43×1012 sec—1 is obtained from the dependence of the half‐width on temperature. The shape of the F band is independent of temperature and is not symmetrical. The moments are computed. The asymmetry is greater than that predicted by the Poisson distribution and the second moment is close to that of a Gaussian. The ratio of the maximum of the K band to that of the F band is 0.03 in vacuum distilled material. In unpurified material this value is not reproducible and may be three times as large. Keywords
