Abstract
We show that a conceptually simple random matrix model of metallic clusters yields dissociation energies which are in very good agreement with both experimental data and results of ab initio calculations. For open shell clusters this model predicts a new phenomenon: a phase transition associated with the loss of spherical symmetry. Keywords
