Suboccipital approach in the removal of acoustic neuromas

Abstract
Surgical removal of acoustic neuromas has always been regarded as the most difficult and most hazardous of the common benign tumours. The best view of the cerebello-pontine angle is through a suboccipital approach, and an excellent exposure of the vascular supply is obtained. The approach has the advantage that it can be used for all sizes of tumours, and the extent of the removal of the occipital bone can be adjusted according to the radiological size of the tumour (Bremond and Garcin, 1975). This paper emphasizes the universal application of this approach for all sizes of tumours and questions the necessity for alternative procedures.
