Abstract
The depletion of titanium is shown to be a strong function of the average gas density in the interstellar medium. It is shown that Ti depletes primarily by accretion on to small oxide grains and that these grains are responsible for the diffuse band at 4430 Å, the extinction bump at 2175 Å and extinction in the vacuum ultraviolet. Recent observational results are discussed and the predictions of the oxide grain model are examined in the light of these results. Keywords
