Abstract
Five cases of severe intestinal amebiasis were treated in the last 10 yr at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The mucous membrane of a large part of the colon was necrotic, and could be peeled off. Histological examination revealed vegetative forms of Entamoeba histolytica embedded in necrotic colonic tissue. This entity was termed necrotizing amebic colitis, and had a high mortality rate. Early diagnosis can be made and mortality can be reduced with prompt antiamebic treatment. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
