Current Status of Tetanus Control

Abstract
There is no substitute for active immunization with tetanus toxoid prior to injury. Every physician should make an effort to actively immunize all his patients. Human tetanus immune globulin is highly effective in preventing tetanus in unimmunized persons who need passive protection. The frequent complications seen with equine and bovine products do not occur and thus no testing for sensitivity is necessary. Equine and bovine antitoxins are hazardous even in persons with negative sensitivity tests and should be replaced by the human product.
