Abstract
Two basic characteristics of enzymes as analytical reagents for the determination of substrates are the focal point of this Plenary Lecture, firstly the high degree of selectivity (or even specificity) offered by enzymes and secondly the regeneration afforded by enzymes as catalysts. Various approaches to the monitoring of enzyme-catalysed reactions (e.g., direct monitoring, coupling to indicator reactions and amplification by cycling) are considered in detail.
