Abstract
Examination of 240 patients with chronic bronchopulmonary infections showed actinomyces to be present in the sputum of 109 of these patients and in the exudates obtained bronchoscopically in 65. Actinomyces were always found in a mixed infection and probably were significant clinically in the development of chronicity only under anaerobic conditions. Favorable response to therapy occurred with the use of chemotherapeutic drugs and antibiotics, particularly when these were used in conjunction with surgical therapy.
