RELATION BETWEEN A2 HORIZON CHARACTERISTICS AND DRAINAGE IN SOME FINE LOAMY ULTISOLS

Abstract
In central North Caroline the A1 plus A2 horizons of Ultisols in medium textured materials are thinnest in the poorly and moderately well-drained and thickest in the well-drained soils. In the well-drainged soils the clay content and thickness of the A horizons possibly are related to depth of the winter water table. These relations suggest that A2 horizon formation is most active at well-drained sites. Total time of weathering is less important in determining A2 horizon characteristics than the total time a site has been well-drained.
