Abstract
The ectomycorrhizae of Cortinarius hercynicus and C. variecolor on spruce are comprehensively described and compared. These species differ in some anatomical, morphological, and chemical characteristics. The literature on anatomical and morphological features of the ectomycorrhizae of species of Cortinarius subg. Phlegmacium so far described is reviewed. Cortinarius hercynicus is the first species of Cortinarius subg. Cortinarius for which the mycorrhizae are extensively characterized.
