Morphology of the spores of Myxosoma notropis Fantham, Porter and Richardson, 1939

Abstract
The spore of a myxosporidan parasite from the liver of a common shiner, Notropis cornutus, from Lake Sasajewan, Algonquin Park [Ontario, Canada], is described from phase photomicrographs of fresh specimens. Histochemical and scanning electron microscopic study revealed the presence and distribution of a mucus-like material on the surface of the spores. The dimensions and morphology of the spore are similar to those given for M. notropis which was described from a similar location in N. cornutus from Quebec.
