A calorimetric investigation of the spin glass: CuMn

Abstract
In a continuing effort to further understand the magnetic ordering found in spin glasses, the specific heats of polycrystalline samples of Cu .988Mn.012 and Cy.976Mn.024 were measured in the temperature range 2–40 K. The low‐field susceptibility measurements on the same samples showed the characteristic sharp cusp‐like peaks at 11.1 and 19 K, respectively. However, there is no indication of a discontinuity nor of a cooperative‐type peak in the magnetic specific heats at these ordering temperatures. Instead, the magnetic specific heats increase smoothly with the temperature and display rounded maxima centered at 14 and 26 K, respectively. The magnetic entropy changes from absolute zero to the ordering temperautre are only 0.33 of cR ln (2J+1) and to 30 K are approximately 0.55 of cR ln (2J+1). These results on CuMn are in agreement with a previous calorimetric investigation of AuFe and appear to be in disagreement with the most recent theories on spin glasses used to explain the susceptibility peak.
