Abstract
The Stark effect in the J = 2 → 3 transition was analyzed to obtain the values 1.04 ± 0.02 and 0.46 ± 0.02 D for the dipole moments of CHCl3 and CFCl3 respectively. Taking into account Stark and quadrupole interactions and using an approximation to the Van Vleck and Weisskopf pressure‐broadening equation, pressure‐broadened spectra for the J = 2 → 3 transition were computed for both molecules and compared with measured spectra. The results show the great effect pressure broadening can have on the general appearance of a spectrum. Keywords
