The Deposition of C 14 in Bone

Abstract
Rats were given intraper. injns. of BaCO3 or NaHCO3 containing 75-150 [mu]c. of C14. They were killed at 3 days and at 2, 4, 8, and 16 wks. after injn. Control rats were injd. with P32 or Sr89. The bones were fixed in abs. alcohol, embedded in nitrocellulose, and sectioned without decalcification. Autoradiographs of these sections and of alcohol-fixed soft tissues were made. Sr89 and P32 were found to be deposited most heavily in the meta-physis. The results with C14 were markedly diff. C14 injd. as carbonate appeared primarily in those areas occupied by preexisting bone. It did not appear in appreciable amts. in the areas of most recently deposited bone salt. The C14 content of the bones did not decrease appreciably from 3 days-16 wks.
