Abstract
Red kidney beans are treated with fluorescein, copper sulfate, iron sulfate, and NaHCO3, and Photosensin, the commercial prepn. consisting of a combination of the 4 previously named substances. Concns. of Photosensin heretofore ascribed as stimulating plant growth owing to the fluorescein content are without noticeable effects on the plants. Likewise, comparable amts. of NaHCO3, iron sulfate, CuSO4, and fluorescein are without noticeable effects. Stunting effects elsewhere attributed to high concs. of fluorescein are shown to be the result of high osmotic pressure arising from addition of large amts. of NaHCO3 to keep the fluorescein in soln.
