Bartenders' Respiratory Health After Establishment of Smoke-Free Bars and Taverns

Abstract
THE LONG-TERM health effects of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) have been established during the past 2 decades. Strong epidemiologic evidence links ETS exposure with lung cancer1,2 and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.3-6 As a result, ETS has been estimated as the third leading preventable cause of death.7 By contrast, the more immediate impact of ETS exposure on adult respiratory health has received less attention.8 Although household ETS exposure is a known cause of respiratory symptoms in children,2,9 studies examining the effect of ETS on adult respiratory symptoms have yielded conflicting results.2,10-18
