Abstract
Are families who are considered at risk of abusing or neglecting their children socially isolated, or do they have access to informal helping networks? This article reports the results of a study showing that friends, relatives, and neighbors are potential helpers for such families and are effective in resolving the problems they address. The author investigates the role—which can be mediated by a social worker—of these natural helpers in prevention.
