Biodegradation of lignin-derived molecules under anaerobic conditions

Abstract
Soluble fragments of lignin origin obtained by thermochemical treatment of [14C]lignin-labeled lignocellulose served as substrate for anaerobic enrichment cultures. This study demonstrates that oligolignols, thought to be refractory under anaerobic conditions, can be degraded to lower molecular weight compounds and to methane and carbon dioxide.
