Abstract
To the Editor: Although most cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the United States occur between April and September, approximately 3 per cent of the cases are reported during the colder months of the year. Presumably there are some errors in reporting, because specific serologic testing is not performed in the majority of patients. We recently reviewed 64 suspected cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever reported to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) from 1970 through 1980 in which the onset of illness occurred during the late fall and winter months.
