Some Characteristics of a Linear Turbulently Heated Plasma as Observed by a Secondary Emission Detector

Abstract
The measurements of the ion temperature T i are carried out on a turbulently heated plasma, using a secondary emission detector (S.E.D.), and unreasonably high values of T i are obtained. In order to unfold the observed results, a simulation code is developed, which includes the ionization effects as well as the energy transport equations for electrons and ions. In the calculations, the heating current, heating voltage, and the electron temperature T e are chosen as independent variables in accord with the experimental conditions. The value of T i as a function of time is first evaluated. Reasonable agreements are obtained between the calculated and observed temporal behaviors of the S.E.D. output currents. The effect of high energy tail in the ion energy distribution is also examined.
