La couverture forestière des Causses du Massif Central de France au Post-glaciaire, d'après l'étude de charbons de bois préhistoriques

Abstract
The study of prehistoric charcoals from 19 stations of the Causses (south of Massif Central, France) corresponding to the larger part of the Post-glacial time, shows that from the Atlantic period a forest of pines (Pinus silvestris L.) and oaks was growing. At the beginning of the Sub-boreal period the pine-area was reduced to its present boundaries, in the north of the Larzac. This fact is the result of a climatic change (dated by the radiocarbon from 2 500 B.C.). At the same time, the Causse Mejean colder than the former, was covered with forest of pines and oaks as far as its eastern limit. On the beginning of the Sub-atlantic period a beech-forest was growing at the same place. The clearing of this part of Causse Mejean would have begun at the end of the Sub-boreal period.
