Gerontology, a Relatively New Area of Social Science in France

Abstract
Research in social gerontology in France is a new domain that is making rapid strides. Although it was first stimulated by public agencies and private organizations in order to clarify their policies for the aged, it is trying today also to respond to theoretical questions touching on the notion of age and the advancement of age. An overview of recently undertaken research and its results makes apparent the extreme diversity of current theoretical orientations. Aside from purely descriptive studies one finds theoretical analyses that either adopt a “culturalist” point of view of the aged or place the accent on the “differential” character of the aging process.
