Abstract
The influence of: hydrogen ion concentration, dilution, temperature, dehydrating agents and nature of the ring produced on the transformation of aliphatic hydroxysulphonic acids into the corresponding sultones has been investigated. A generally applicable process for the preparation of sultones is given. Some physical properties and constants are mentioned. The sultones are sulphoalkylating agents and may be identified as pyridinoalkylsulphonic acid betaines, formed by the reaction of sultones with pyridine. We further showed that sultones, when reacting with alkylmagnesium compounds, keep their sulphoalkylating properties.
