Abstract
Two cestodes were encountered in 85 owls, of 10 spp. and sub-spp., collected mainly from the north central states. Paruterina candelabraria was the more common, occurring 8 times in the great horned owl, Bubo v. virginianus, and once in the barred owl, Strix v. varia. Paruterina sp. was also recorded from the screech owl, Otus asio naevius. _P. candelabraria from N. American owls is compared with specimens from European owls, and a diagnosis, based on American material, is given. C. speotytonis n.sp. is descr. from the burrowing owl, Speotyto cunicularia hypugaea, collected near Denver, Colorado, and is differentiated from the other avian cestodes of the genus. In an addendum, observations on the life cycle of Paruterina candelabraria are given. Thirty days after feeding gravid segments to mice, Mus musculus, extremely heavy liver infections were observed. Hook measurements and hook shape showed these to be the cysticerci of P. candelabraria. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
