Bilateral Renal Hypoplasia with Oligomeganephronia: Quantitative and Electron Microscopic Study

Abstract
The case of a 12-year-old boy with oligomeganephronic renal hypoplasia is reported. On light microscopy the histologic findings were typical, although the clinical course had been mild. Quantitative study with camera lucida suggested that the observed increase of mesangial nuclei was not due to glomerulonephritis. A striking decrease in epithelial cells was noted in the second biopsy. Abnormalities in the basement membrane and widespread foot process fusion despite only mild proteinuria were demonstrated by electron microscopy.
