Abstract
The article that follows is both a historical landmark and a theoretical discussion of unusual contemporary value to psychology. It is the written version of a speech delivered by L. S. Vygotsky at the Second All-Union Congress of Psychoneurologists, held in Leningrad in 1924. This was Vygotsky's first major contribution to Soviet psychology, and it came at a critical time in the history of Soviet science. Keywords
