Abstract
Bitemporal field depression strongly indicates lesion of the optic chiasma but is not necessarily the case. Nine patients are reported to have bitemporal visual field defects which can be explained by inversion of the optic discs with subsequent changes in the fundi. The defects could only be demonstrated with small objects. The condition was in all cases associated with myopia and astigmatism. Some of the most suspicious findings that the defect could be due to an ocular cause are inversion of the optic discs with vessels emerging towards the nasal side, field defects that are not strictly confined to the mid-line, choroidal atrophy with hypopigmentation of the fundi in the nasal area and also ectasia of the fundi where this is found.
