Inhibition of Gastric Motility by Acid in the Duodenum

Abstract
Introduction of [image]/10 HCl into duode-num or jejunum promptly inhibited gastric motility in human subjects. This "enterogastric reflex" was not activated when acid was instilled into the ileum or colon. The same inhibition occurred in patients with complete vagotomy, thoracolumbar sympathectomy, partial gastrectomy, or transection of the spinal cord. While the short latent period favors a reflex phenomenon, neither the afferent or efferent arc has yet been demonstrated.
