Osmotic Pressure Variations in the Aqueous Humour and their Influence on Outflow Facility

Abstract
A report is given of an experimental study on enucleated rabbit eyes concerning the influence of intraocular pressure and osmotic pressure of the aqueous humour on outflow facility. The outflow facility has been shown to be influenced by the perfusion time and the aqueous composition. When crystalloid-osmotic or colloid-osmotic pressure of the aqueous were elevated by-means of glucose or Ficoll®, a significant decrease in outflow facility resulted. This might be caused by the rise in viscosity (Ficoll) or/and by the obstruction of the filtering membranes (glucose).
