Lymphocyte Transformation

Abstract
Lymphocyte transformation in vitro after exposure to purified protein derivative (PPD) was demonstrated in 7 patients with proved or probable active tuberculosis who failed to react to intradermal PPD. Six of the 7 ultimately became reactive to PPD 19 days to 3 months after in vitro transformation was first observed. It is suggested that the lymphopenia observed in these patients might have been responsible for the lack of intradermal reactivity. The lymphocyte transformation test appears to offer a valuable addition to the clinical armamentarium available for the diagnosis of tuberculosis.
