Abstract
A clinically suitable viscous substance (Healon) is available for use in human ophthalmic surgery. The problems of tactility and methods of resolving them with viscous substances are examined. These are not simple substitutes for aqueous humor which, once introduced, may be left in the eye. They are compared with mechanical instruments employed for a specific purpose and subsequently removed. Due to their stabilizing effect, viscous substances increased safety in many types of manipulation. Their side-effects must be analyzed.
