DMCT was given to 119 male patients with acute uncomplicated gonorrhea in single oral doses of 0.9 or 1.2 g and in 2 doses of 1.2 g each at an interval of 4 to 6 hr. An attempt was made to differentiate between relapse and reinfection by history of sexual exposure following treatment. Failure rates were also calculated on all those who experienced recurrence within 2 weeks after treatment, those experiencing recurrence later than this being diagnosed as reinfection. Failure rates ranged between 13 and 20%, the higher overall rates being found in the groups treated with the lowest dosage. However, among Negro patients, 1/3 of those treated with the highest dosage schedule were reported to have failed. This paradoxical result is probably due to the fact that a number of the supposed recurrences were in fact re-infections .
