Abstract
The blood levels of glucose, pyruvic and lactic acids were determined in maternal blood and in the umbilical vessels of 70 hypoxic fetuses divided into 3 groups depending on the severity of hypoxia. With increasing severity of hypoxia the fetus produces more and more glucose and lactic acid. These changes may be due to an increased part played by anaerobic glycolysis in the fetus due to impairment of the fetoplacental circulation.
