Abstract
The literature on deinstitutionalization of chronic mental patients is reviewed with an emphasis on Canadian studies. Deinstitutionalization of mental patients has been occurring rapidly in Canada as in the USA and this process sometimes results in problems. A reexamination of the deinstitutionalization literature suggests that chronic mental patients fare no worse and sometimes fare better in the community than in institutions when adequate community support is provided. More Canadian research on deinstitutionalization seems to be required. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
