Abstract
The two concepts that secretion of thyrotrophin (TSH) from the pituitary is a major determinant of thyroid secretion and that the circulating thyroid hormone concentration in turn regulates TSH secretion have been well established for many years. An additional hormonal determinant of TSH secretion is the hypothalamic factor, thyrotrophin-releasing hormone (TRH). Nevertheless, only recently, with the application of the highly sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay method to the measurement of TSH in plasma or serum, has it been possible to assess quantitatively the role of TSH in the maintenance of thyroid secretion and the effect of thyroid hormones or other factors
